Memorial Day, BBQs & Ice Cream

Monday 30 May 2011 is Memorial Day - a public holiday in honour of those, both past and present, who give military service for their country in the name of peace. The long weekend that it brings has traditionally become a time when families and friends get together and perhaps enjoy a meal together or a bbq out in the sunshine.

If you are thinking of doing the latter, then there are some super ideas for bbq food - the International Business Times for example this week published a great feature with recipes for Blue Punch, Barbecue Beef and Red, White & Blue Ambrosia.

What really caught my eye was the 8 scoops vanilla ice cream required to make the Blue Punch. You can of course buy ice cream BUT if you have time, I think it's always best to make your own homemade ice cream. Freshly made, with a creamy custard base and using a real vanilla pod, there's no vanilla ice cream quite like it in my opinion.

Here is my real vanilla ice cream recipe.

Enjoy a great weekend!

Ice Cream In A Basket

Ice cream in a basket? Yes, it's just one of many great ways of serving ice cream at this time of year.

Waffle baskets are similar to waffle cones and I like the ones lined with chocolate as it adds a little extra 'oomph' to the ice cream. What's nice about a waffle basket is that there's enough room to have a scoop or two of fresh ice cream wedged in between a few chunks of fresh fruit.

Check out my mint choc chip ice cream sundae in a chocolate-lined waffle basket. Delicious!

Ice Cream In The News

There seems to be an interesting item of news about ice cream just about every day. I even have Google News customized on my iPhone so that I can read the latest stories!

Here's a great little ice cream story I read about recently. An ice cream salesman took his ice cream truck down to the local beach one Sunday anticipating good sales and was just looking forward to a good day in the sunshine when the soft sand took him by surprise and his ice cream truck got stuck in the sand!

Thankfully it all ended happily when a local rescue charity came and towed the ice cream truck to safety before the tide came in. The driver was quoted as saying ....

"Without their help, I would have been selling ice cream to the fish when the tide reached me!"

French Ice Cream Cones - Mansize!

Ice cream may be made differently in different countries but one thing that remains constant is the wonderful eye-catching displays in ice cream parlours and outdoor ice cream kiosks.

Here are some photographs from a trip to France where I was naturally drawn to French ice cream and was intrigued to learn how ice cream was made and promoted.
